Track Overview

DR Facts, Realities & Opportunities

Track Leader:  Mary Ann Piette
Wednesday May 21, 2008

This track will focus on research, development, implementation, demonstration, and future of demand response (DR) technologies, practices, and strategies in the United States. DR markets and programs are gaining momentum for commercial, industrial, and residential customers throughout the US and abroad. The technologies and supporting standards are critical in scaling the DR and making the customer response reliable and persistent. Subjects to be presented include technologies, systems and case studies with Automated DR (Auto-DR) and related standards such as Internet, wired and wireless communications. The sessions will also cover the development of the reference design for programmable communicating thermostats (PCT), Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) initiatives. These sessions are targeted toward energy and technology professionals, utilities, independent systems operators (ISOs), customers, control vendors, aggregators, and other third-party stakeholders.

DR Technologies, Standards & Trends

11:30 - 1:00

This session will discuss trends in standards and technologies to support demand response. There will be two types of relevant standards. One type of standard focuses on control and communications to support open, interoperable technology and common information and signaling systems. Second are building energy codes such as California’s Building Energy Code known as Title 24. This session will provide overview and details on the advancement of automated DR (AutoDR) using standard-based technologies such as DR automation server (DRAS) standards initiative. These standards and technologies are geared to support two-way communication and can be used for both, price and reliability-based DR programs and tariffs. Details on these standards, AutoDR, Programmable Communicating Thermostats (PCT), reference designs, will be included in the session.

DR Implementation Success Stories

2:30 - 4:00

This session will focus on demand response implementation success stories by aggregators, end-use customers, and utility and ISO programs. Experts from around the country will present their success stories and results from implementing DR in their service territories. Examples of success stores from automated DR (AutoDR) pilot program in 2006 and commercial offerings by California investor owned utilities (IOUs) – Pacific Gas and Electric(PG&E), Southern California Edison(SCE), and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) – in 2007 will be included to demonstrate the feasibility and success of AutoDR program technologies and tariffs.

At the end of session, certificates and awards will be distributed to 2007 PG&E AutoDR participants.

DR, Energy Efficiency, and the Future of Green Buildings

4:30 - 6:00

Greater integration of demand response and energy efficiency is needed to ensure that investments in energy systems, technologies, and practices are integrated and optimized. Opportunities for this integration include open data exchange for DR and energy management systems, energy information and enterprise energy management systems, and advanced end-use controls for both DR and energy efficiency.
